Diverse Representation comes to Atlanta!
Welcome Back!
This past weekend I attended an event posted by Diverse Representation. This event was to allow people to connect with minority attorneys, publicists, managers, agents in the Atlanta community.
The mission of Diverse Representation is to increase the exposure and number of African-American agents, attorneys, managers and publicists who work in the sports and entertainment industry. The current discussion on diversity in the sports and entertainment industry has overwhelmingly been limited to the perspective of those names and faces we see on the screen, on court or on the field. Rarely do we speak about it from the perspective of those doing the leg work behind the scene who represent entertainers and professional athletes, negotiate fair deals and foster relationships for future work. That conversation shifts now.
Diverse Representation provides a comprehensive database of African-American agents, attorneys, managers and publicists working in the sports and entertainment industry throughout the country. Discussions surrounding diversity in the sports and entertainment industry need to be all-encompassing and include conversations about racial discrepancies when it comes to the representation of talent and professional athletes. Diverse Representation seeks to ensure diversity throughout all facets of the sports and entertainment industry.
I arrived at the event as it was 40 minutes in. At first I was a little apprehensive, everyone was already talking and those initial introductions are always the hardest part for me. Not soon after someone who had walked in about the same time as me said hello, a writer/ director, and we began to chat about what we were looking to get out of the event. A woman joined us in conversation, another writer, and we just talked about our path and what brought us here, little did I know she was apprehensive for the same reason. We were later greeted by the host who even started to connect us with other people she met at the event. It was at a beautiful venue made even more beautiful by the many black professionals there and I can’t wait until the next one!
